Working Life of Salary Insufficient for UK Workers to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Analysis Says

Per recent analysis, the typical employee in the UK would require 52 years' worth of salary to attain the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Economic Disparity Through the Years

The analysis reviewed wealth distribution information including the Covid pandemic period and found that in the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to enter the richest segment of the wealth distribution.

A senior economist associated with the study stated: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a regular employee setting aside their entire income throughout their career would remain unable to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Quantifying the Wealth Divide

The study found that the gap between the assets of the typical individual and someone in the wealthiest decile was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had increased to £1.3m in real terms by the pandemic years.

The researcher added: "These differences are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – those who commence life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the wealth gap expanding in actual numbers, the portion of overall assets in the UK held by the most affluent homes – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," as stated in the analysis.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Wealth Inequality

Referred to as "unearned" gains, through increasing property values and adjustments to pension valuations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide since 2010, according to the analysis.

These appreciations generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Area-Based Differences

There were also stark geographic differences, with the median value of wealth in the pandemic period amounting to £290,000 in south-east England, where housing costs have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to £110k in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows countless homes were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, though. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the typical family in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the analysis concludes.
